Parents, Welcome to the Air Cadet program. Your son or daughter will gain valuable skills and make new friendships that can last for years to come. Your involvement as a parent will support and encourage their progress and success.

Monthly Parent Meetings

All parents are welcome and strongly encouraged to attend monthly Squadron Sponsoring Committee (SSC) meetings held on the first Tuesday of each month.  There are many events that take place throughout the cadet training year and this is the best way to be informed about your child’s activities and to be able to engage in question and answer with the Commanding Officer.  Monthly meetings also provide parents the ability to be an active participant, learn about upcoming volunteer opportunities, and have a voice in decisions regarding fundraising and how fundraising dollars are allocated.  We encourage all parents to provide their e-mail address so that you can receive monthly communication regarding meetings and be sure to check our website https://604moose.ca/ for more detailed information.  .

Cessna 172

We are lucky enough to be the only squadron in Canada to own our own Cessna 172. It gives our cadets an opportunity to go flying on many weekends throughout the year. Cadets will receive information on how to sign up for these flights during their training evening.

Fundraising

Maintaining our plane, purchasing and maintaining equipment and supplies and providing financial support for a wide range of activities is the key responsibility of the Squadron Sponsoring Committee.  Although, the cadet program is co-sponsored by the Department of National Defence and the Air Cadet League of Canada, additional funds are necessary to augment the program and maximize opportunities available. Fundraising activities have included casinos, WestJet raffle ticket sales, calendar sales, bottle drives and wreath sales.  It is essential that all parents and cadets take an active role in fundraising activities throughout the cadet training year.

Important Protocol for Parents and Guests:

  • Use only the main front door to enter/exit the building. Side doors are alarmed.
  • Parents are not permitted to walk across the parade square during training evenings as that space is reserved exclusively for cadets and officers (this space is usually delineated by parade markers).
  • Any time that the Canadian Flag is raised or lowered or O Canada is played, we ask that you stand still, remove hats and give your attention to the flag as is expected by Cadets.
  • Each parade evening ends with announcements that provide important information for both parents and cadets. Due to poor acoustics on the parade square we ask for your support in remaining silent so that vital information is not missed.

The safety of our cadets is paramount. Cadets shall be dropped off and picked up in a parking lots near Mewata Armoury.

Volunteers

If you have a unique skill that can benefit our cadets please let us know. We always need and appreciate support of any kind!

The Air Cadet League of Canada and its partner, the Department of National Defence (DND) jointly support the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, a premier youth organization. The Air Cadet program is a comprehensive program, which is run in a structured, disciplined and safe manner. In this context, it is important to ensure all volunteers are appropriately selected, initially supervised, well-intended, offer skills which add value and complement the program, and are good role models for Air Cadets. Knowing the volunteers, their skills and talents, and their intended contribution is very important to the Squadron Officers, staff and Sponsoring Committee. A team effort produces the best results for the greater benefit of the Cadet Movement.

It should be understood that the League’s responsibilities for civilian volunteers complement those of DND and are of a supporting nature. The Commanding Officer and his/her supporting staff have command and control of the Cadets and are responsible for supervision and implementation of the training program set out by DND. To fulfill its responsibilities to the cadets, DND is required to conform to rulings by the Supreme Court of Canada that defined the level of care required by any organization in protecting youth under its direction. This level of care has been defined as that which would be exercised by a prudent parent in protecting their child. As a full, active partner in this aspect of the Air Cadet Program, it is also reasonable that we should also insure ensure that our registration and screening protocols meet the same standard required by our military partners.

To become a screened parent volunteer every applicant is required to successfully:

  • Complete a Volunteer Screening and Registration Application Form.
  • Complete a criminal record check.
  • Provide a current jpg photo sent via email

An interview will be required after receipt of this completed form, the criminal record check and the photo. To begin the screening process please contact our screening coordinator at screening@604moose.ca

We thank you for your generous offer of volunteer services and hope you understand the legal and moral obligation of the League in reviewing the suitability of all individuals working or involved with youth.

Please note that we do have a range of volunteer opportunities available for both screened and non-screened volunteers.

Volunteering will enhance your cadets’ experience.
We welcome any and all participation large or small.

Feel free to contact us at anytime via e-mail and we look forward to having you join 604 Moose.
